“ 【Background】 Sunday, December 1, 2024, 6:14 PM Mama Lu's Dumpling House is an extremely famous franchise with a total of five locations: Monterey Park (the original flagship location on East Garvey), Pasadena, City of Industry, Los Angeles Chinatown, and Tustin [1]. There is another restaurant with the exact same name in Monterey Park (501 W. Garvey Ave.) but don't get them confused since the West Garvey location has a completely different owner [2]. Mama Lu's has an expansive menu that spans over 100 dishes. They are most known for their xiaolongbao (XLB) and beef wraps. Because I was fourth wheeling my friends and their toddler, I wanted a place that was more casual and wouldn't break the bank, so we landed on the City of Industry location for dinner. My friends arrived before me, so I just walked right in. However, it was still early, so there wasn't a line, and there were still plenty of empty tables. I noticed the inside is spacious with plenty of seating. However, the tables are definitely packed together. The regular rectangular tables are a bit close, but the tables with lazy Susans have more breathing room. Also, the interior design is lacking. The furniture, walls, and floors are boring, and there are minimal decorations. Keep in mind that the online prices are a little more expensive than the dine-in prices. Of course, I had to get the popular dishes alongside some other items that sounded tasty, so we ordered: * 1. Juicy pork dumplings (8) ($9.99) Arriving in a metal steamer, the pork dumplings lived up to their name: they were extremely juicy with a flavorful soup filling. I did notice that the skin at the top where the dough swirls is a little thick, but overall, the dumplings were delicious. * 7. Beef wrap (6) ($10.99) Another famous item, the beef wrap came with six pieces. This dish was savory and filled with tender beef that had a little bit of fat, cilantro, and crunchy cucumber spears. The outside was perfectly pan fried, and the roll had a nice golden brown color. This was probably my favorite dish of the meal. * 39. Chicken pan fried noodle ($14.99) Originally, we ordered 37. Chow mein with soy sauce for the toddler in case they were picky, but the parents decided to add chicken at the last second. This item had tender chicken, huge pieces of bok choy, and purple onion. However, I thought that the dish could've used a bit more flavor. * 47. Shrimp fried rice ($14.99) Of course, we had to order some rice to eat with all the other food. Obviously, the fried rice included shrimp, eggs, and mixed vegetables (carrots and peas). The shrimp fried rice came out on a huge platter and tasted great. * 77. Kung Pao chicken ($13.99) The Kung Pao chicken had plenty of onions and bell peppers. The red chilis added a decent kick to the dish while the peanuts added nuttiness and a crunch. I wish they were more generous with the chicken since I feel like they included a lot of vegetables as filler. * 84. Eggplant with garlic sauce ($12.99) Lastly, we needed some vegetables to balance out the meal. This dish came with a generous portion of soft eggplant mixed with pieces of chicken, onions, and green onions that were all covered with a glistening, sweet garlic sauce. It tasted pretty good, but I prefer eggplant that is cooked in a more savory manner. Overall, Mama Lu's Dumpling House offers good food and an incredible value, thanks to the huge portion sizes. My friends thought the total was going to be over $150, but it was just $78 (pre-tax and pre-tip) for six dishes, and we even had some leftovers, which is very rare for me. I would strongly recommend coming here if you're trying to eat on a budget but still want a huge selection of food options. 【Service】 The service was good here. The waitress came over twice to see if we were ready to order (we weren't), and when she came around the third time, we finally placed our order after about 15 minutes. So it was a little overbearing, but I have to give them props for being attentive. The food came out pretty fast although the juicy pork dumplings came out later than all the other items. Tea is the default drink, and we had to ask for water. Also, if you want refills, you'll have to flag a server down since they don't walk around to refill the tea pot or the waters. But at least they didn't charge for tea. You will also have to be assertive and ask an employee for boxes if you want to take your leftovers home. 【Parking】 Mama Lu's Dumpling House is located in a strip mall shared by many other restaurants and businesses, so there's a huge shared parking lot.
